Carbon Fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) systems are simply defined as high­strength and lightweight reinforcements created by combining carbon (CFRP) with a polymer material (epoxy resin). The performance characteristics of CFRP strengthening system have become increasingly popular in construction and retrofit applications, specifically in aging, damaged, deteriorating or overloaded concrete structures.

Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymers for Structural Strengthening. These fabrics are applied onto the surface of existing structural members in buildings, bridges and other structures. The result is an externally bonded CFRP (carbon fiber reinforced polymer) reinforcement system engineered to increase the structural performance.

Carbon Fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites have been used for structural strengthening in China for almost 20 years. During this period, acceptance of FRP composites as a mainstream construction material has grown, and so has the number of completed FRP strengthening projects. As a result, the use of FRP for strengthening and retrofit is gaining more popularity among design professionals over conventional strengthening techniques, such as installation of supplemental structural steel frames and elements.
